The Head of the Lithuanian Customs has been awarded in Estonia a medal of honour for cooperation in the field of sanctions The Director General of the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania Darius Žvironas

The Director General of the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Lithuania Darius Žvironas, who participated in the celebration of the 106th anniversary of the establishment of the Estonian Tax and Customs service in Tallinn on November 22, was awarded by the Estonian Minister of Finance Jürgen Ligi the 2nd degree medal of honour for international cooperation in the field of the implementation of sanctions.

"It was only due to agreements and joint efforts that it was possible to effectively prevent the movement of sanctioned goods and possible ways of circumventing sanctions. Before conclusion of customs agreements for preventing goods from passing through the customs posts of one country, carriers tried to go through other states, where different requirements were applied. Now we are pleased that we promptly took the initiative and first of all agreed with the Baltic countries on the application of uniform measures, and then other EU countries joined us, seeing that our agreements were effective,” says the Head of the Lithuanian Customs.

DG Darius Žvironas extended his thanks to the Estonian Minister of Finance Jürgen Ligi and the Head of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board Raigo Uukkivi for appreciation, by which Lithuania has been recognized as a leader in mobilizing the forces of the European Union member states to prevent supply routes for the Russian war machine.

On 26 January of this year, the Heads of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Customs authorities signed, at the initiative of the Lithuanian Customs authorities, the agreement on Baltic countries` regional approach to ensure uniform customs controls and information exchange for implementation of the EU restrictive measures in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This regional agreement was subsequently further expanded, since Poland, Finland and Croatia joined it.
